Visiting Texas: A Day Trip to Brenham

Hey Butterflies. It’s spring which means it’s Bluebonnet season here in Texas and last Saturday I took a day trip up Highway 290 to Brenham, Texas with the kid to check out the Bluebonnets. Before getting to the Bluebonnets we had to make a necessary stop at Buc-ee’s because...it’s a Texas road trip must! If you know, you know; btw…what is your favorite thing to pick up from Buc-we’d? 

There’s actually two Buc-ee’s locations on the way to Brenham, a smaller Buc-ee’s in Cypress, Texas and bigger one not to far down the highway in Waller, Texas which is where we stopped. Houston Premium Outlets are also located in Cypress, Texas but since most of the shops don't open up until late morning we decided to stop by the outlets on our way back from Brenham. There are as plenty of other shops and restaurants, including a Zaxby's in the shopping centers in the same area as the outlets as well.

After exploring Buc-ee's we got back on the road and were ankle deep in Bluebonnets in a matter of minutes. We stopped to admire and take photos in the field of Bluebonnets at First Baptist Church Chappell Hill in Chappell Hill, Texas which is not far from Brenham and it was an incredibly beautiful sight to see. Bluebonnet fun facts...the lupine plant (what Bluebonnets are) usually reaches its blooming peak in the spring time and they can be found in a variety of colors like yellow, red, purple, and blue...hence the name Bluebonnets. The Bluebonnet is the Texas state flower and can be seen all along the highways here in Texas. It’s not illegal to pick Bluebonnets according to The Texas Department of Public Safety however, it’s frowned upon in some places so be respectful and aware.

After checking out the Bluebonnets, we were back on the road and on our way to Truth Barbecue. Parking is a bit limited and the wait time to order is outrageous but the food is amazingly delicious. We stood in line for over two hours just to try this place and it was so worth it! It's kind of pricey but the portions are enough for two meals. A slice of cake is $6 bucks but it could properly feed three people and they're super yummy. Besides the long line and getting all the way back to Houston and realizing they didn’t put the potato salad I ordered in the bag, it was a great first time experience. I also wanted to take the kid on a tour of the Blue Bell Creameries while we were in Brenham but it's only open during the week so instead we drove pass it and I told her about my first time touring the Blue Bell Creameries as a kid.
