Mom Life: What Mom Really Wants for Mother's Day

Hello my mother loving Butterflies! Mother's Day is here and if you adore the mum/mama in your life then I'm pretty sure you're going bunkers trying to find the perfect gift for her. Is it flowers, chocolates, a gift certificate, or cash? The truth is most mothers could care less about material things (or at least the moms I know), most moms just want to know that their hard work doesn't go unnoticed and that's as simple as 1, 2, 3…

1. Tell her that you love and appreciate her. We've all heard the old saying, "actions speak louder than words" but, sometimes words are all it takes for your love and appreciation to be felt. A healthy balance of both words and action would be ideal like telling her why you appreciate her while serving her breakfast in bed.

2. Give her some QT with a little TLC. Spend a day with her! It doesn't have to be on Mother's Day, in fact most moms would prefer a little alone time on Mother’s Day. There’s this episode of “The Middle” (streaming on HBO Max and Hulu) that basically sums up how moms feel about this. Anyway, choose a day when you both have free time and spend the day with her doing whatever she enjoys; e.g. walking, listening to music, watching movies, or gardening. My mom loves scouting for unique finds at garage sales and thrift shops.

3. Give her what she asked for. Moms are always so busy making sure everyone has what they want and need that they seldom do so for themselves. So if you ask her what she wants for Mother's Day and her request is for something specific that is not too outrageous, then do everything within reason to get her exactly what she wants or at least as close as possible (I mean don't go spending your life savings on one day). 

One year my kid's dad got me a jar of tootsie rolls and when I asked why (I'm not big on sweets), he said because that was the only thing left and he didn't want to not get me anything for Mother's Day. I have to admit my feelings were a little hurt that day, not because he got me tootsie rolls and I don't really eat candy like that (it's the thought that counts) but because the gift wasn't thoughtful at all, it felt more like an obligatory gift and I would have just rather had the $10-$20 he spent to buy whatever I wanted. 

However you decide to express your appreciation for the mom in your life, do it with love and thoughtfulness.
