Wellness: 8 Ways to Stay Active While Taking Care

Hi Butterflies! I hope everyone’s new year is off to a great start and everyone is getting back to their regular routine. I know some people tend to get off track with their fitness goals when the holidays come around and then there’s others like myself who’ve probably been off track for awhile and find it challenging to get refocused, but we have to do what we have to do right?

Like every other responsible adult on the planet, my days usually consist of a million different things to do and since I can’t make it to the gym as often as I would like, I have no choice but to find alternative ways to stay active. Finding little ways to stay active throughout the day is easy (where there’s a will, there’s a way) and overtime can make a big difference in our individual health journeys. Here are a few creative ways to stay active while taking care:

1) Fold and put away the laundry. Once upon a time years ago before we started picking our attire for the day from the laundry basket filled with clean clothes from a week or so ago, we used to fold and hang laundry, actually putting them away in closets and dressers. Getting back to this will not only help you stay organized, it’s also a nice little surprise for your arms.

2) Deep clean more often. Dusting, decluttering, cleaning baseboards, cleaning the oven/fridge/freezer and any thing else that hasn’t been cleaned recently is no doubt one of the easiest ways to workup a sweat without even trying.

3) Pick out your own groceries and cook more regularly. With all the new grocery pick up and delivery services that are available now, there’s really no need to go shopping for groceries. However, I actually prefer picking out my own items. Not only am I able to choose which items I get, I’m also getting in steps towards my daily 10,000 while in the process. Cooking regularly is also a good way to stay active while taking care. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to cook daily, try cooking simple meals one or two times a week or try meal prepping on your days off so that you’re not tempted to visit a fast food drive-thru.

4) Park further away, take the stairs, and return shopping carts. Doing this whenever possible will help you get closer to your 10,000 daily steps goal.

5) Dance whenever you hear that song you like. Dancing is one of the easiest ways to stay active and your brain becomes so distracted with how much fun you are having that you won’t even realize you’re getting in a workout.

6) Go Shopping. Skip the mall and department store since you’ll be tempted to spend more. Instead, stroll the aisles at your local resale shop, dollar store or farmers market.

7) Partake in a family game night regularly. Hula hoop, twister, charades, pillow fight, bean bag toss, freeze dance, simon says, limbo, hide and seek, or treasure hunt.

8) Take water breaks at work. I’m so guilty of not taking breaks as often as I should at work because honestly, I prefer to get it all done and get out of there as quickly as possible. However, lately I have been getting up more often to give my eyes a break from the computer screen, stretch my legs, use the bathroom, and get a drink of water. These are all very healthy habits that we often time forget to do regularly because we’re so busy.
