Self-Care: 4 Ways to Avoid Stressing Over the Holidays

Happy Holidays Butterflies! Holidays are supposed to be spent enjoying the ones we love but how can we do that when we’re weighed down with unnecessary holiday induced stressed?

Well, the first thing you have to do is understand that things don’t always go as planed and it’s ok if everything isn’t perfect. Then, take a deep breath, exhale the stress and get busy.

Day 30: Recent moment you are grateful for?

I had a moment of feeling extremely overwhelmed by life at work the other day and one of my coworkers gave me a hug. It was a nice gesture and I’m grateful for that moment. What recent moment are you grateful for?

Day 29: What change are you grateful for?

I let go of a few toxic associations this year and although I still have a few more to go, I’m grateful for my progress thus far. What change are you grateful for?

Day 28: What small thing that you use daily are you grateful for?

The shower. Second after writing, the shower is also very therapeutic for me. It’s where I get to enjoy alone time (well most of the time, moms know what I mean lol), relax, think and figure things out. What small thing you use every day are you grateful for?

Day 27: What natural resource are you most grateful for?

Water. We drink it, cook with it, wash with it, bathe with it and so much more. I’m grateful for all of earth’s natural resources but water especially.

Day 26: What act of self-love are you grateful for?

I just realized like two days ago that it’s time to let go of a toxic friendship that I’ve tried to hold on to for the past almost twenty years. It hurts but it’s necessary and I’m grateful for that realization and for loving myself more than the idea of comfort.

Day 25: What act of self-care are you grateful for?

I treated myself to a massage recently, hadn’t had one in years.

Day 24: What financial lesson are you grateful for?

There are so many financial lessons that I learnt in recent years, none of which I was exposed to growing up, but I guess the most recent financial lesson I learned was that it’s ok to live a little while being mindful of your budget and credit. I was on my best financial behavior for two years straight, this year I decided to live a little...just a little though lol, I’m still somewhat optimistic about my future goals.

Day 23: What taste are you grateful for?

My moms food. No food cooked anywhere, ever is better than the taste of my moms food. She’s creole, and cooks from her soul. Her legumes and gumbos are two of my favorite dishes she makes.

Day 22: Something that happened today that you’re grateful for?

I was able to take a nap today and although it’s something so mediocre, I’m always extremely grateful when the anomaly occurs. What is something that happened today that you are grateful for?

Day 21: Song from this year you are grateful for?

A song from this year that I’m grateful for? Easy...No Tears Left to Cry by Ariana Grande, I freaking love that song. Every time I hear it I feel at peace.

Butterflies, what song from this year are you grateful for?

Hi Butterflies, what’s your favorite wine? If you’re still trying to decide then you probably should check out Winc’s monthly wine club. Winc is a modern wine brand that makes it easy to find wines you love.

Day 20: What personal trait or characteristics or you grateful for?

For the most part I’m an introvert and I usually tend to isolate myself from people but when I do interact, I’m open and sincere. A lot of people will pretend to be someone or something they’re not and only deal with a person because they have an ulterior motive, I try not to be that kind of person and I’m proud of that. So I guess I’m grateful for my openness and sincerity.

Day 19: What smells are you grateful for?

Smells that remind me of my childhood. Every once in a while I encounter a smell that reminds me of something from my childhood, does this happen to anyone else?

Sexy Butterflies, have y’all seen Miss Jill Scott’s explicit microphone performance? A video of an old Jill Scott performance is making its way around the internet and apparently everyone except the real J. Scott fans are in shock.

Jill Scott tweeted in response to the video with an invitation for all to cum [sic] check out one of her shows, including the hashtag #stopfrontinusuckdicktoo

Day 18: What kindness are you grateful for?

The random kind people I encounter occasionally.

Day 17: What in nature are you grateful for?

Vegetation. I enjoy seeing things grow and all the changes they go through.

Day 15: What sounds are you grateful for?

I love listening to music, I love listening to nature, and I love hearing my kid laugh but the sound I’m grateful for is the delightful sound of a quiet room.

Day 14: What spiritual practice are you grateful for?

Some people attend worship services regularly, some fast, some minister, some shout, some praise dance and others rejoice in song but the spiritual practice I enjoy the most and am extremely grateful for is Prayer. It’s intimate; only between you and your higher being and can be done at anytime or anyplace. What spiritual practice are you grateful for?

Day 13: What challenge are you grateful for?

I’ve been dealing with anxiety pretty much my whole life, it’s challenging and makes living harder but I’m grateful for the challenge. It’s part of who I am and has taught me so much. Butterflies, what challenges are you grateful for?

Day 12: Which of your senses are you most thankful for?

Sight, Smell, Sound, Taste, or Touch? This is a tough one for me, I mean they each serve a unique purpose in our everyday lives that shouldn’t be taken for granted. I guess I forget or just don’t think about how much I depend on my senses to get me through each day; I can’t pick one, I’m thankful for all of my senses.

Day 11: What holiday are you thankful for?

My favorite holidays are Halloween and Valentines Day. I appreciate Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Thanksgiving but I’d have to say the holiday that I’m thankful for is New Year’s Day. I’m thankful for New Year’s more than any other holiday because I consider it a huge blessing to be able to set eyes on a new day and an even bigger one to gaze upon a new year.

Butterflies, what holiday are you thankful for?

Day 10: What tradition are you grateful for?

Us staying up until or waking up right before midnight to give birthday licks to each other, our annual family road trips and my holiday card exchange. What tradition(s) are you grateful for?

Day 9: What achievement are you grateful for?

This year was pretty “meh” for me, I didn’t really focus on any of my goals but for the sake of keeping a positive tone, I didn’t give up on life this year so I guess that’s sort of an achievement right?

Day 8: What Inspirational person are you grateful for?

Jhene Aiko. I don’t know if I can say she’s an inspirational person but I definitely can relate to her and she inspires me to keep going.

Day 6: What technology are you grateful for?

I’m grateful for the camera. I’m a very sentimental person and memories are everything to me.

Day 5: What teacher are you grateful for?

Probably my fifth grade teacher Mr. Garret, he always spoke well of me. I use to run into him at the grocery store with my guy a few years back, he still remembered me and had nothing but nice things to say. His kind words were an exceedingly beneficial part to my self-esteem development as a adolescent/young adult. I’m grateful for him.

Day 4: What book are you grateful for?

“You are a Badass” by Jen Sincero.

Day 3: What Color are you grateful for?

Black. It’s my happy color. What color(s) are you grateful for?

Day 2: Who in your life are you grateful for?

So I’m naturally introverted, and usually just stay to myself but I’ve learned over the years that being quiet and staying to yourself just draws more attention to yourself (which I hate) so I try to reciprocate any interactions. Though it’s usually awkward and filled with anxiety, I’m grateful for the people that engage me. I’ve met most of my life friends that way.

Day 1: What blessing are you grateful for?

Maybe it’s the pessimist in me but every day that I am able to awake and my loved ones are safe and sound, I feel blessed. What blessing are you grateful for?
