Visiting Texas: My Thoughts on the Councilman Dwight Boykins Situation

Butterflies, if you’re in the Houston area you’ve probably heard about all the backlash Councilman and Mayoral candidate Dwight Boykins is receiving following a speech he gave at the 2019 Youth Advocacy Summit hosted by Mi Familia Vota Education Fund. My kid attended the summit and she, as well as a lot of the other young ladies that were present were very unsettled by Mr. Boykin's message. Apparently Mr. Boykins was asked a question by the young ladies about women’s rights and somewhere along the line his response to the question morphed into an entirely different discussion. My daughter showed me the video when she got home and we talked about it.

Music: Date Night at A Train Concert + Best Train Songs

The Summer Tour 2019 with Train, The Goo Goo Dolls (one of my other favorite bands) and Alan Stone made a stop in Houston this weekend. I went with my partner who doesn’t really know the music but knows that I love it so we both still had a really great time. We grabbed a few drinks, picked our spot on the lawn and enjoyed the show. Afterwards we stopped for cupcakes…good times.

Train released their first studio album titled Train in February of 1998, which is also lead singer Patrick Monahan’s birthday month. I love all of Train’s albums equally but if I had to choose, my favorites are Save Me San Francisco and My Private Nation. Check out my favorite Train tracks below...

Jhené Aiko recently released a new freestyle titled Triggered. On the track Jhené Aiko creatively expresses her process of feeling. I’m awed and admire how she’s not afraid to share her dark side with the world, I mean we all go through hard times and the only way out is to talk about it which is why I’m so transparent when it comes to mental health. Coming from a person who has suffered from anxiety and depression their entire life, triggers are real and can send you on a downward spiral instantly.

Wellness: Introversion & Social Anxiety

May is National Mental Health Month and this year I’m discussing Introversion and Social Anxiety. Being introverted doesn’t automatically mean the person is shy or has social anxiety, the two things are similar but different. Introverts prefer to have more alone time to be with their thoughts and do things on their own. Shy people or people with social anxieties fear interacting with people and panic when they are in social situations. However, it is possible to be introverted and suffer from social anxiety at the same time which is something I have struggled with my whole life. Many introverts might even develop some form of anxiety because people don’t fully understand an introverts’ need to be alone.
